Au Naturel

Perhaps no wine term provokes more controversy than “natural wine”. Its defenders claim that the low-intervention style, where wines are not afforded the usual protections against faults, more clearly communicates terroir, produces fresher, “crushable” wines, and prevents hangovers. Its detractors say the wines are volatile, inconsistent and funky.

As we always say, the proof is in the glass. Join us for an 8 wine tasting flight pitting natural wines against their more conventional counterparts. Will you become a convert after realising that wine is more fun raw-like many other things (we’re talking about sushi!) Or will you decide that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using some protection?

That's What She Said: Foreign Talent Better

🇮🇹 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬

At SWC, we’ve always championed native grapes and heritage. But let’s not whitewash the truth: as the infamous 𝙊𝙭𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮 found, international grapes (or to the natives, “foreign talent”) have their diehard fans too. Some say it’s because foreign talent are more forward. Others say foreign talent have more interesting (last?) names. A bold few claim that it’s because only foreign talent come in 𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙣𝙪𝙢 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩. 👀

But wine grapes are like people - beauty isn’t just skin-deep. Join us for a blind tasting on 7 Nov at @jiaherestaurant featuring some of Italy’s most exciting local varieties vs their international counterparts, and find out once and for all: are you more ABC, or ABG? 🍇

$169 early-bird pricing ends 7 October, email us at hello@singaporewineclub.com for tickets! 🎟️

Cork Block: Twelve Flavours

We’ll be hosting a dinner on 8 October at the very highly sought-after private dining gig “Twelve Flavours”, by Masterchef SG winner Derek Cheong. This will be a BYO “Cork Block” dinner with the $160 ticket price being entirely for the dinner cost.

As Twelve Flavours seeks to recreate Southeast Asian flavours, the BYO theme of the same name will celebrate Asian flavours found in wine as well. Each attendee should bring a wine that features one of the twenty listed Asian flavours (we suggest a price floor of at least $80 retail).

Drop us an email at hello@singaporewineclub.com if you’re keen on joining and after confirming your spot, we’ll add you to the dinner chat group to “chope” your chosen flavour.

Indecent Exposure

For our next event, Singapore Wine Club will be 𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒊𝒈𝒉. Don’t call the CNB—we’re talking about wines grown on slopes, which help grapes ripen in some of the world’s most hostile environments where nothing else can grow.

And as any good publicist will tell you, 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 makes all the difference. North-facing slopes vs south-facing slopes; wines grown inland vs wines facing the river; wines on elevation vs the lower-hanging fruit. Tiny variations can produce very different wines.

As always, the proof is in the glass. On 11 April, we’ll be exploring 8 French wines over an elevated (😉) 4-course meal at Praelum Wine Bistro, where we’ll be comparing wines from the same variety and vintage but grown in vineyards with different exposures. We’ll be showcasing one of Champagne’s best-kept secrets, a flight of Premier Cru burgundy and 4 surprise bottles.

Email us at hello@singaporewineclub.com to secure your tickets. Early bird pricing of $228 until 2359h on 23 March 2025.

New World New Me

New Year’s resolutions about “self-discovery” are so 2024 - for 2025, why not make a resolution about 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗲 discovery? 😉

The “New World” has always been a Euro-centric concept - but the truth is there is no longer anything “new” about wines from countries like Australia, the US and New Zealand, as the wines have become staples on every wine list and top producers celebrate their centenarian anniversaries.

With climate change presenting opportunities for a range of undiscovered, exciting wine regions - including in Asia! - perhaps it’s time to reappraise the wines that make up the “New World”. So on 24 January, join us at Crane Living as we embark on a comparative tasting between wines from the “New” New World (think China and England) and the “Old” New World.

Early bird tickets are priced at $88 (for orders placed and paid before 5 January 2025). Email/DM us to secure your tickets today!

Clos Call

Clos Call

Few concepts encapsulate terroir more than France’s famous “Clos”, or walled vineyards. The Cistercian monks raised these impressive erections by hand, to protect unique soils and microclimates and keep wine thieves from poking around in sacred areas.

On 10 January, join us for an exploration of some of France’s most hallowed “Clos”, including the legendary Clos de la Coulee de Serrant and Clos de la Roche. Over 6 different wines and a 3-course French meal at-where else?-Clos at New Bahru, we’ll discuss the history of these sites, debunk myths and answer the age old question: is it really better to use protection?

The monks liked gatekeeping, but we don’t-so we’re looking forward to sharing some hidden gems with you in this first event of 2025!

Early bird pricing ($250) for orders placed and paid by 2359h on Christmas Day.

Sugrue - The Trouble With Dreams Vertical

Sugrue - The Trouble With Dreams Vertical

Calling all bubbly lovers, brunch lovers and drinkers curious about English wines — Singapore Wine Club is proud to present, in collaboration with Juliet Victor Asia, a vertical tasting of the signature “The Trouble with Dreams” (TTWD) cuvee from Dermot Sugrue, the cult winemaker and critics’ darling of English sparkling wine (including several in magnum format. We’re also offering a rare taste of the highly-allocated Brendan O Regan tête de cuvée (retailing at well over $200, if you can even find it 🤫).

While we are generally skeptical of claims that English sparkling competes in the same category as Champagne, Sugrue’s wines defy comparison. The acidic spine and tension of the wines and their mineral intensity have a Champenois slant, but boast a distinctly English X Factor.

But don’t take our word for it. Join us on 29 September for a multi-vintage TTWD vertical going back to 2014, providing a valuable opportunity to assess ageability in a field with very few aged references. English wines deserve an English meal and we’ve curated a special 3-course brunch menu with Angie's Oyster Bar & Grill featuring the UK’s most famous export after imperialism—fish and chips!
